Pop-Lite

Pop-Lite (Pop-Lite: Romanian Popular Novels and Their Sub-genres during the Long Nineteenth Century: digital editing and corpus analysis) aims to overcome the lack of digitized resources, literary corpora, and tools adapted to the specifics of modern Romanian culture, to preserve non-canonical texts through digital editing and to bring an innovative approach to the pre-processing, storage and processing of literary texts. Pop-Lite will provide 100 Romanian novels published between 1850 and 1920 in interoperable and machine-readable formats.

Pop-Lite is the first Romanian initiative based on the integration of specific DH (digital humanities) tools and methods with traditional approaches to history and literary theory. The focus on methodological issues and concepts coming from the DR sphere will facilitate the transfer of best practices and will generate an impact both in the national academic environment and internationally.

Our Objectives

  • O1: to create a literary reference corpus for the study of the 19th-century popular novel and its sub-genres;
  • O2: to test and customize existing analysis tools in DLS (digital literary studies) on the diachronic varieties of the Romanian language;
  • O3: development of young researchers’ skills in DLS and DR (distant reading), including the assimilation of digital skills, best practices, and methods;
  • O4: engaging a critical mass of researchers in an interdisciplinary investigation of data extracted from literary sources, focusing on the theoretical, methodological, and practical effects of the DR approach in Romanian literary history and theory.
